Catholic Church responds to the president’s comments about Jesus and Mary Magdalene

The bishops of the Catholic Church in Colombia they issued this Wednesday January 28 a statement reaffirming its faith in Jesus Christ and making a call to respect religious beliefsafter the controversial statements of the President Gustavo Petro about the life of Jesus and his relationship with Mary Magdalene.

In the statement COM–CEC–040/26the Episcopal Conference of Colombia (CEC) highlighted that Jesus Christ is “the only Son of God, true God and true man, center of our faith and hope.”.

The prelates stressed that Jesus cannot be considered only a historical figure or a moral reference, but the Savior in whom the Church believes and confesses.basing his message on the Sacred Scriptures and the living Tradition of the Church.

The statement also recalled that Colombia, as a secular and social State governed by law, has the duty to guarantee religious freedom and protect the autonomy of confessions.

According to the bishops, “The secular nature of the State does not imply ignoring or delegitimizing religious beliefs, but rather ensuring the freedom of everyone to profess and live them without discrimination.”.

In this sense, they emphasized that no civil authority is called to issue theological judgments on the faith of citizens.

The reaction of the Church occurs after the President Petroduring a speech in Bogotá, stated that He believed that Jesus “made love, yes, maybe with Mary Magdalene”in addition to qualifying it as a “man of light and revolutionary”.
