The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) reported that its performance improved in the World University Rankings by Subject 2026, which publishes the Times Higher Educationa result that consolidates it as the leading institution in the country and one of the most internationally prestigious.
In this edition, the highest educational institution recorded substantial improvements in various disciplines, particularly in law, life sciences, social sciences, as well as arts and humanities. These advances, he assured, consolidate his commitment to the professional training of young people in Mexico.
The comparative analysis of ranking reveals that, of the 11 thematic areas evaluated, it rose in five, while in the remaining six it maintained the position obtained the previous year.
The most notable rebound, he details, is observed in the field of law, where it jumped from the 201-250 range to the 101-125 block. A similar advance occurred in arts and humanities, which climbed from 176-200 in 2025 to 101-125 in 2026.
“This progress positions UNAM within the regional academic elite, sharing leadership with the most prestigious universities in Brazil and Chile and ratifying its educational quality in the face of a world environment of increasing demand,” the institution noted.
Likewise, he reported that he registered significant advances in other fields of knowledge, highlighting education studies, which rose to the 176-200 range; social sciences, which was located in block 251-300, and life sciences, a discipline that managed to be located in block 401-500.
For their part, areas of high technical complexity such as engineering, computer science, medicine and psychology maintained stable positions, which demonstrates the consistency of their academic programs.
The methodology of the World University Rankings by Subject 2026 uses 18 performance indicators grouped into strategic dimensions: quality of teaching, excellence in research, transfer of knowledge to industry and international perspective.
