An overwhelming majority of the US Congress approves an initiative in support of the 11J in Cuba

(EFE) .- The US House of Representatives, with a Democratic majority, approved this Wednesday an initiative in support of those who took to the streets in Cuba on July 11, in what were the largest anti-government protests on the island. in six decades.

With the backing of 382 legislators and the rejection of 40, the initiative was approved in the Lower House and now it will go to the Senate and then be sent to the White House, where the US President, Joe Biden, must sign it for it to become law. .

The text expresses the “solidarity” of Washington with the Cubans who were arrested on July 11 and condemns the “acts of repression” of the Government of Cuba, in addition to calling for the “immediate release” of those who were “arbitrarily” detained during the protests. .

The project was promoted by Democratic legislator Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and received the support of Republican Mario Díaz-Balart, both representatives from the state of Florida, where a large part of the Cuban exile resides.

The text expresses the “solidarity” of Washington with the Cubans who were arrested on July 11 and condemns the “acts of repression” of the Government of Cuba.

On July 11, thousands of Cubans spontaneously took to the streets to demand more freedom and political change in protests that resulted in hundreds of arrests and prison sentences.

For November 15, some sectors of the island called a peaceful march; But the Government denied permission to hold that protest and warned the organizers that they will be charged with crimes and will be prosecuted if they maintain the decision to march.

In Cuba, the rights to strike and demonstration are not contemplated outside of state institutions, which is why, had it been authorized, the November 15 march would have set a historical precedent.

However, in reaction to that ban, Washington has warned that it will respond, possibly with sanctions, if the “fundamental rights” of the Cuban people are violated or the promoters of the November march are prosecuted.
