After the remains of Enriquillo, the new excavation in Azua

An international team of archaeologists, headed by the Dominican Kathleen Martinez Nazarthe project’s field work will begin in February “Behind the remains of Cacique Enriquillo”an investigation that seeks to locate the bones of the legendary indigenous leader Enriquillo.

The excavations will be carried out February 2 to 28 in the ruins of Old Townin the province of Azuawith the support of the General Directorate of Strategic and Special Projects of the Presidency (Propeep) and the Macarrulla Foundationsays a press release.

The general director of Propeep, Robert Polancohighlighted that the initiative is part of a country vision aimed at rescuing and dignifying historical memory. “Rescuing the memory of Enriquillo is recognizing the value of the struggle of our native peoples“he stated.

The team

The team will be made up of specialists from the Dominican Republic, Egypt and Spain, with experience in funerary excavations, archeology and osteology. Among them are Egyptian doctor Aya Salem, from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities; the Spanish archaeologist Antonio Guio Gómez; as well as the archaeologists María Luz Carretero Hernández and Eva María Moreno González. For the country, among others, the anthropologist José Antonio Arias and the archaeologist Melisa Berigüete will participate.

For her part, the executive director of the project, Lidia Martínez de Macarrullapointed out that the research transcends the archaeological and represents a act of justice historical and recognition of one of the main symbols of indigenous resistance in America.

  • “This search is not only archaeological; it is an act of memory, of historical justice and recognition of our native peoples already one of its greatest leaders,” he said.

The project has generated expectations both in the academic community as in the province of Azuaconsidering that an eventual discovery would have a high historical impact and cultural for the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.

The project “After the remains of the Cacique Enriquillo“was presented by the Macarrulla Foundation in order to locate his skeleton and perpetuate his legacy as symbol of dignityresistance and moral leadership.
