Shortage of medicines and medical supplies, as well as infrastructure in poor condition due to the presence of cracks in walls, ceilings and floors, deterioration of expansion joints, among others, the staff of the Comptroller’s Office of the Republic detected during an inspection of the José Cayetano Heredia Regional Hospital of EsSalud, in Piura.

According to report No. 035-2026-CG/SALUD-SVC, in the visit that was made to the aforementioned hospital from December 30, 2025 to January 7, 2026, they detected a shortage of 49 medications and 25 medical supplies, according to the report of the Quality Information System – Infocal, which affects equitable accessibility to the necessary medications for patients.
Among the missing medications are abacavir, mycophenolic acid, distilled water, albendazole, alteplase, azathioprine, caffeine citrate, cyclosporine, chlorpromazine hydrochloride, saline, cholecalciferol, rifampicin, pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, magnesium sulfate, progesterone, mitoxantrone, methylphenidate hydrochloride, among others.
The commission did not find the following medical supplies: lumboperitoneal valve, pulsatile and continuous aspiration irrigation system, copper T, Thompson N48 partial prosthesis, iliac homologous bone graft, N05 endotracheal tube guide, among others.
“…it is noted that the stock status of pharmaceutical products in the Pharmacy service is critical […] could affect the accessibility of essential medicines for the prevention and restoration of patients’ health,” the OIC stated.
They warned that the analog stationary X-ray equipment has limitations and constant failures and does not have an adequate digitization system, which affects the timely care of patients.
Furthermore, personnel responsible for equipment that emits ionizing radiation do not have a license from IPEN, which puts the safety of personnel and users at risk.
Likewise, cracks were found in walls and ceilings in different environments such as management, telemedicine, teleconsultation, nursing headquarters, kitchen, medicine warehouse, biomedical equipment workshop, and in the interior and exterior corridors of the hospital.

It concludes that these detected failures could cause damage to the infrastructure, generating a safety risk for both workers and patients.
