Santo Domingo.-The president-elect of Chile, José Antonio Kast, positively valued the Dominican model of border control during an official visit to the province of Dajabón, where he learned first-hand about the progress of the intelligent border perimeter fence, one of the main initiatives of the Dominican Government in matters of national security, territorial control and sovereignty.
The visit has a special meaning as it is Kast’s first international outing after being elected, which was highlighted by President Luis Abinader as a recognition of the Dominican Republic and the progress made in citizen security, immigration control and institutional development.
The elected president also highlighted the historical and strategic value of Dajabón as a key point of the country’s border policy.
During the tour, the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, presented to President Abinader and the Chilean president-elect the advances, scope and strategic benefits of the smart border perimeter fence, explaining that it is a project that combines physical infrastructure, cutting-edge technology and a permanent operational deployment of the Armed Forces.
Fernández Onofre highlighted that the perimeter fence constitutes a fundamental tool for the defense of national sovereignty, contributing significantly to the reduction of illicit trafficking of goods, weapons, drugs and undocumented immigrants, as well as the theft of vehicles, motorcycles and livestock in border areas.
He noted that the project is part of a broader security strategy, supported by surveillance towers, patrol roads, solar lighting, camera systems, fiber optics, radio frequency and autonomous drones, all monitored from the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cybersecurity and Intelligence Center (C5i) of the Armed Forces.
For his part, the president-elect of Chile highlighted that the Dominican model allows effective border control to be combined with regional cooperation actions and humanitarian considerations.
He indicated that the observed experience will serve as a reference to strengthen the security and border control plan that he plans to implement in his country, especially in relation to the detection of false identities and the prevention of crimes associated with irregular migration, such as human trafficking.
Kast was accompanied by his wife, María Pía Adriasola, as well as the Minister of Security, Trinidad Steinbeck, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Pérez Maquena, who also valued the combined use of technology, physical control and inter-institutional coordination as key elements to guarantee citizen security and strengthen democracy.
