78% of Peruvians perceive corruption in José Jerí's meeting with a Chinese businessman

He has tried to justify and soften his suspicious clandestine meetings with a Chinese businessman. He has given three different versions in the same number of days and yet he has assured that he did not lie to the country and that it was a mistake.

For Peruvians, however, the president’s rapprochements with Zhihua Yang, the businessman identified by Congress itself as the operator of the so-called Chinese Construction Club, raise serious doubts and project unmistakable signs of possible acts of corruption.

And according to the latest survey carried out by Ipsos for Peru21, 78% of citizens rate the presidential conduct as suspicious and reveal signs of corruption. For 15% of those interviewed, however, Jerí’s unrecorded quotes do not reveal anything irregular.

Despite this severe diagnosis and the widespread idea that the president’s conduct lacks transparency, the majority mood is not inclined towards an abrupt departure, as demanded by a good part of Congress, which has already presented six motions of censure and one motion for vacancy against him.

Thus, 62% of Peruvians consider that the most convenient thing for the country is for Jerí to continue in office until the end of his term, on July 28.

For 36% of those surveyed by Ipsos, the healthiest thing is for the acting president to leave office and be replaced by another congressman.

According to political analyst José Carlos Requena, the results reveal that “there is an inclination of Peruvians towards stability due to everything we have been through in recent years,” and that President Jerí’s suspicious meetings “clearly show what will be the main liability that he will have to face in the months he has left in office.”
