The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, assures that the kidnapping of Maduro and Flores violates the United States Constitution, as well as international human rights conventions of the United Nations, the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.
He insisted that the Trump government violated the principle of immunity enjoyed by the president and his wife. «This is an absolute and exceptional personal immunity, which has been violated and based on that, between now and March he can request his absolute freedom from the court. There is an unequivocal, unique demand, the unconditional freedom of President Nicolás Maduro and the representative and first lady, Cilia Flores,” he insisted.
He also stressed that the first lady Cilia Flores is a representative, elected by the people, so she also has immunity. “All that was violated, it was dissolved into pieces,” he stressed.
He reported that there are currently five national prosecutors investigating the events that occurred in the country on January 3. “We have five national prosecutors investigating these events, because the world has to know about it and has to wake up,” he said.
«In a context foreign to what is a world of peace and without precedent, the events of last January 3 occurred, by means of force, violence, with a regrettable balance of between 100 to 120 Venezuelans, civilians and military, massacred in a totally, not only aberrant, unjust manner, but outside of all legality.
He stressed that the attack was carried out with “bombers, helicopters armed with missiles, with chemical weapons”, which, he maintained, also caused damage in residential areas, “where – he warned – there were elderly people, children, women, many of whom died.”
“Therefore, in a context foreign to what is a world of peace, these events occurred and that cannot be ruled out, forgotten,” he added.
Prosecutor Saab assured that a new court hearing is scheduled for March for Maduro and Flores in New York, who face alleged charges related to narcoterrorism, for which he called on the US Justice Department to take “a step forward” in the face of what he described as an accusation “absolutely incoherent, implausible” and full of “falsehoods.”
“What one reads there is absolutely incoherent, implausible, totally unconnected, one accusation with the other after an initial narrative that seems more like a copy-and-paste memorial of everything that appeared through the bots (…) to, based on any number of false, gruesome stories, grab one or another case with tweezers where both President Nicolás Maduro and his wife are unrelated to them in their origin,” he said from a day of the Public Ministry going to the Community in Caracas.
On January 3, the United States launched a massive military aggression in Venezuelan territory, which affected Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira. The operation concluded with the kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were transferred to New York. The places attacked were mainly of military interest, where air defense devices and communications systems were deployed, although urban areas were also reached and there were civilian victims.
Caracas described Washington’s actions as a “very serious military aggression” and warned that the objective of the attacks “is none other than to seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals, attempting to forcibly break the nation’s political independence.”
