According to the authorities, the attacker was “an individual unrelated to the educational institution.”
MIAMI, United States. – The General Directorate of Education in Santiago de Cuba (DGEP) reported this Thursday that a student from the pre-university (IPU) “Elvira Cape”, in the municipality Songo La Mayawas attacked with a knife while traveling from the educational center to her home.
According to the entity, the attacker was “an individual outside the educational institution.”
At 5:00 in the afternoon, the time of the Facebook publication by the General Directorate of Education in Santiago de Cuba, the student was receiving medical attention, reported as “stable.”
In the text, the educational authority described the event as “regrettable” and said it learned about it “today,” without specifying more details about the exact moment of the attack. The institution indicated that it was an event that occurred outside the school, during the trip home, and stressed that the alleged aggressor did not belong to the school.
The statement added an institutional condemnation of what happened: “The DGEP strongly repudiates these acts of violence that are incompatible with our Education sector and the values of humanism, civic spirit and respect for life that govern Cuban Society.” Likewise, he assured that he would keep the educational community informed “of the student’s clinical evolution”, without offering, for the moment, data on the severity of the injuries, the identity of the aggressor or whether he had been arrested.
This is not the first time that an attack of this nature has occurred in an educational center or its surroundings. In September 2018, the Provincial Directorate of Education of Havana confirmed that nine students had been stabbed at the “Olo Pantoja” Technological Institute (La Lisa). According to what was published then, the case involved people outside the center.
More recently, in May 2023, CubaNet public another act of violence with a knife inside a school, although with a different profile: the murder of a teacher in a school in Bayamo (Granma).
