Today, the Permanent Commission handed over to the group of legislators the president’s request for the ratification of Gertz as the new ambassador, and once the file and documentation proving the requirements required for the position by the Constitution were reviewed, the former prosecutor was summoned to appear.
The purpose is to gather more evidence for the preparation and approval of the opinion, which is expected to occur this Thursday, to proceed to its vote in the plenary session of the Permanent Commission next Monday.
Gertz submitted his resignation on November 27, 2025 and it was accepted by the Senate amid speculation regarding the reasons for his resignation.
In his resignation letter he only argued that his departure was due to the president’s invitation to be ambassador, which allowed him to continue serving Mexico.
Although he did not appear before to explain his resignation, he will now do so to explain the plans he has to represent Mexico before the United Kingdom.
Senator Verónica Noemí Camino Farjat, president of the Political and International Affairs Committee, reported the format of the appearance and terms of the ratification procedure.
“First the doctor would start with a message, then there would be the parliamentary groups with their different questions and then the closing by the doctor. Subsequently, the discussion will take place around this ratification”, in order to approve the opinion, if necessary, he explained.
The appearance is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and, explained the Morena senator, the process must be concluded before the closing of the Permanent Commission, scheduled for next week.
Once the plenary session of the Permanente approves the opinion in the Plenary Session of the Permanente, it must notify the Presidency of the Republic to conclude the process.
