José Jerí: They present two motions of censure for secret meetings

Today, parliamentarians from different groups presented three motions of censure against the president of the republic. José Jerí. Legislator Ruth Luque, promoter of one of the three motions announced in recent days, pointed out that the requirement demanded by the Internal Regulations of the Congress which states that 33 signatures are required to present this motion.

“The required requirement was met. We complied with presenting the motion. A repeatedly lying president, who has hidden meetings and, apparently, negotiations with businessmen, does not deserve to be in office anymore. Now we are going to see if Fujimorism and the right shield him as they did all the time with Dina Boluarte,” the parliamentarian wrote in her X account.

In the motion, raised after learning of the secret meetings of the president of the republic José Jerí, it is maintained that the president of Congress assumes the presidency of the Republic by succession, maintaining its legislative origin and, therefore, indicates “the mechanisms of parliamentary control such as censorship are subject to.”

In this regard, it is worth noting a legal report prepared by the Ministry of Justice, to which he had access Peru21alleges that the attempt to censure the president is not appropriate because “this would imply an undue extension of an internal parliamentary mechanism to the scope of the Executive Branch.”

In its recitals, the motion of censure outlines journalistic reports about the clandestine meetings of the acting president with the Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang and his subsequent meeting with the same person in a commercial establishment in the center of Lima.

Along these lines, it is maintained that “the actions of the acting president offend the judiciary of the two positions that he currently holds and generate all kinds of alarm about the under-the-table arrangements that he would have been carrying out.”

Likewise, it points out that the president’s conduct “violates the principles of probity, transparency and suitability in public office, and shows a conflict of interest that has been brewing from the highest position in the State.”

A second motion of censure against Jerí was also presented to Parliament and is signed by legislators from Together for Peru, Democratic Bloc, Socialist Bank and non-grouped groups, among others.

It states, among other things, that Jerí “has demonstrated that he lacks the ethical and political suitability necessary to continue exercising the presidency of Congress, having engaged in conduct and omissions that have weakened the supervisory role of Parliament, affected citizen trust and seriously compromised the institutional image of the Legislative Branch.”

“The repetition of private meetings, without institutional registration and with people linked to relevant economic interests, violates the principles of transparency, accountability and primacy of the public interest that must govern the actions of all political authorities, and becomes more serious when the person holding them holds the highest representation of the Legislative Power. These events not only affect the image and credibility of the Congress of the Republic before the citizens, but also compromise public trust in the political leadership of the country, evidencing conduct incompatible with ethical and political responsibility,” he points out.

A third motion of censure was presented in the afternoon and has Jaime Quito of the Socialist Bank as one of its main promoters.
