About the investigation
The acting prosecutor of the Nation, Tomás Gálvez, confirmed for La República that the fiscal hypothesis points, preliminarily, to the alleged crimes of illegal sponsorship of interests and influence peddling. He pointed out that these criminal figures are taken as an initial reference and that it will be the development of the proceedings that will make it possible to determine specific responsibilities and the scope of the facts investigated.
According to the explanation provided, the investigation against José Jerí is being processed by the National Prosecutor’s Office due to his status as a senior official. In parallel, the businessman Zhi Hua “Johnny” Yang, since he does not have a pretrial, will be investigated by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, which shows a double procedural path to establish possible criminal responsibilities.
Hours after the investigation was announced, José Jerí sent a document to the Attorney General’s Office in which he reported that José Jerí made himself available for the preliminary investigation opened by his meetings with Chinese businessmen. In addition, he sent a letter to the presidency of the Congressional Oversight Commission in which he expressed his willingness to collaborate with the requirements of said working group and attend to the procedures requested within the framework of the investigations.
