MIAMI, United States. – The United States Embassy in Havana warned this Tuesday that, “in recent weeks,” Cuban authorities have denied entry to American citizens upon their arrival to the Island and, in other cases, have ordered them to leave the country “immediately” under threat of arrest.

The Embassy added that it cannot “provide a solution” to issues related to entry into Cuba or forced departure from the country, but requested that, in case of detention or need for assistance, U.S. citizens contact the American Citizen Services (ACS) section of the mission in Havana.
As part of its recommendations, the Embassy urged reviewing the State Department’s official information on Cuba before traveling, including travel warnings and alerts, passport and visa requirements, and recalled that US citizens must have a visa to legally enter the Island.
Along the same lines, the State Department maintains a level 2 travel warning for Cuba (“extreme caution”), which mentions risks of crime and electricity supply problems, in addition to reiterating that US legislation prohibits tourism and regulates travel through licenses and categories authorized by OFAC.
The consular notice also recommended not trying to enter Cuba with electronic cigarettes or vaporizers, drones, satellite phones, GPS or other similar devices, and warned of consequences for failing to comply with immigration and customs regulations, including confiscations, severe penalties or detentions.
