Penal Forum counts 777 political prisoners as of #19Jan: 70 are foreigners

Penal Forum registers 887 political prisoners until #1Dec: of 60 their whereabouts are unknown

Foro Penal specified that since the announcement of the releases made on January 8 by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, they have received “a significant number of reports of new cases that had not been referred to us before.”


The Penal Forum organization registers a total of 777 political prisoners in Venezuela until January 19, of which 70 are foreigners or with dual nationality.

The figure, according to the NGO, has remained the same since last week. Of the total number of detainees, 678 are men and 99 are women. The group is made up of 604 civilians and 173 military personnel; 775 adults and two teenagers.

Foro Penal also points out that the whereabouts of 66 political prisoners are unknown.

According to the organization’s history, from 2014 to date, there have been 18,739 political arrests in Venezuela.

The updated list of political prisoners was sent to the Organization of American States and the United Nations for verification and certification.

The organization specified that since the announcement of the releases made on January 8 by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, they have received “a significant number of reports of new cases that had not been referred to us before.” Of these reports they have been able to verify 122.
