The meat and milk producers of the province of Chiriquí ask the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, to establish State policies to deal with the Trade Promotion Agreement (TPC) with the United States, in force since 2012.
Álvaro Martínez, spokesman for the meat and milk producers, explained that they expect the support of the State and that they are not left alone so as not to have to be subsidized as other items have been, as a result of the pandemic and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
He stressed that the war situation could generate grain shortages even in the United States, since Ukraine is one of the largest producers and exporters of this item.
On Wednesday, the Panamanian authorities sent a note to Thomas Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture of the United States, and Katherine Tai, commercial representative of that country, in which they request the North American authorities to review the TPC.
According to a statement issued by the entity in the note Panama intends to “invoke the mechanisms to make adjustments provided for in the Treaty, in reference to items of special social or sensitive interest, such as rice, milk and its derivatives, and meat of chicken and pork.
