Henrique Capriles rules out elections in the short term: “We are not yet in transition”

The deputy and former governor of Miranda, Henrique Capriles, asserted that, like the “majority of Venezuelans,” he is pushing for a change of government and not an “agreed peace” with the ruling party. He indicated that the opposition bench has not been given the draft reform of the Organic Hydrocarbons Law. the funds and other proposals delivered by Delcy Rodríguez to the National Assembly a week ago

The deputy to the National Assembly, Henrique Capriles, ruled out new elections being held in the short term, considering that there are no signs for a democratic transition with Chavismo remaining in power after the armed intervention of the United States and the capture of Nicolás Maduro.

«If we hold elections tomorrow, will we resolve the country’s crisis? No. How are we going to elections with that National Electoral Council? We were clear and look what happened, what happened on July 28 and what happened after. I believe that what is urgent is that we must stabilize the country because it is the urgency of the vast majority of Venezuelans,” Capriles expressed during a news conference with members of the “Freedom Parliamentary Group.”

He indicated that once progress is made in “stabilization” there can be pressure for the “reinstitutionalization of the country”, an issue that the United States “understood.”

He asserted that, like the “majority of Venezuelans”, said opposition bench – which includes deputies from Unión y Cambio and Alianza del Lápiz – is pushing for a change of government and not an “agreed peace” with the ruling party.

To achieve this, he stressed, the Chavista administration must take clear steps towards a democratic transition. This includes, highlighted the former governor of Miranda, the immediate and full release of all political prisoners, respect for freedom of expression and opinion, as well as “urgent” economic improvements that benefit the population.

«We are not yet in transition… many are still imprisoned and not with full freedom… The return of the embassies is positive, but it does not mean that there is a transition; Those in government are not democrats overnight; “The government has to give signs of change,” he said.

Capriles insisted that the release process “must continue,” while indicating that they have provided a list with the names of all those detained for political reasons. In particular, he said, he advocated for the release of leader Freddy Superlano and Juan Pablo Guanipa.

Capriles advocates for bonuses for workers

Deputy Henrique Capriles questioned that in the report and account of the Executive, presented by Delcy Rodríguez last week, “there was not a single word” regarding family income or measures that directly benefit workers.

«In memory and account it was missing what Venezuelans can expect from their income and well-being. There were no words for the country and its expectations. I agree that the country must be stabilized economically, but this must change; People wonder if they are going to inject dollars into the market due to the sale of the oil tanker, if that is going to translate into them being able to buy dollars in the banks. “It was pure speech without a single action,” criticized the former governor.

He asked for “clarity” about the implications of the energy agreement with the United States and that it translate into immediate benefits for the population.

He also proposed a one-time bonus of $150 immediately for workers. This bonus, in the long term, should be eliminated to strengthen the minimum wage and pensions, which, he said, should not be less than $100 per month.

“Our immediate demand is economic, the energy agreement must imply immediate improvements, eliminating the Large Financial Transactions Tax (IGTF) would be a relief,” he said.

He also said that the opposition bench has not been given the draft reform of the Organic Hydrocarbons Law. the funds and other proposals delivered by Delcy Rodríguez to the National Assembly a week ago. «We do not know its scope and content»

Reunify the opposition

When asked about the state of the Venezuelan opposition, Henrique Capriles indicated that it is time for the reunification of the majority sector, but it is necessary to “lower the arrogance on all sides by 100.”

«Disagreeing does not make us take the side of those who caused the crisis. We must return to the alternation of power in a democratic manner. We have to ask them (opposition leadership) if they are willing to reunify the opposition, we are. There is no competition in the opposition,” said Capriles.

He insisted that the reason for the entry of opponents into the Venezuelan parliament, contrary to the decision of María Corina Machado and the Unitary Platform not to endorse elections after July 28, 2024, is to “seek spaces for understanding” with those who run the country.

«The country as it is is of no use to anyone. We are a small group, but with a clear objective, to be the voice of a majority that has lost confidence,” he highlighted. “What it is about is that we Venezuelans can move forward, that at the end of this situation we are experiencing means the total and absolute recovery of Venezuelan democracy.”

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
