Santo Domingo.– The leader of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and former director of the Metropolitan Bus Services Office (OMSA) died this Monday. Manuel Rivasafter a long fight against cancer.
According to the PLD, Rivas died at his residence, after returning from a medical check-up related to the treatment he was receiving for the disease.
“We are sad to report the departure of comrade Manuel Rivas, member of the Central Committee of the Santo Domingo Oeste municipality,” says a communication from the PLD sent to its organic structures.

The political organization indicated that the relatives, together with the PLD leadership in Santo Domingo Oeste, were carrying out the corresponding arrangements for the wake and funeral services.
At the time of his death, Manuel Rivas He held the status of member of the Central Committee of the PLD, with a career marked by his work in consolidating the party in neighborhoods and communities of Santo Domingo Oeste, Santo Domingo province.
Rivas stayed away from political and public life after having been brought to justice on charges of corruption and linked to the case of the murder of the university professor Yuniol Ramirezwho, according to investigations, allegedly extorted him.
He was president of the PLD in Santo Domingo Oeste and aspired to be mayor of that municipality in the 2016 elections, without achieving the candidacy due to an electoral agreement between his party and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).
He studied Civil Engineering at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), which he entered in December 1974 and from which he graduated in 1982.
In addition to his political career, he had active community participation, promoting the creation of social and sports clubs, including the Reforma Social club, of which he was president.
