Rafael Belaúnde on Jerí's meeting with a Chinese businessman: "In another context it would be grounds for him to be removed from office."

The presidential candidate of Libertad Popular, Rafael Belaunde Llosareferred to the meeting between the president José Jerí and the Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang at a chifa on December 26 late at night. In this context, Belaúnde described the aforementioned meeting as “unacceptable” and assured that this would be a cause for vacancy if the Elections 2026 were not close to being realized.

“That the president is walking around bars at dawn hooded, meeting with businessmen of dubious reputation, seems to me to be unacceptable. Unacceptable and in any other context other than a context two and a half months before the elections, it would be grounds for him to be removed from office,” he mentioned during an interview for RPP.

Along the same lines, the candidate for the presidential seat related the meeting at the chifa with the Sarratea case, in which the sentenced former president Pedro Castillo received unregistered visits.

“They are the same practices. So the authorities have the obligation to make their actions public, especially the President of the Republic,” he highlighted.

“Even if he is a businessman of the highest parchments and prestige… The meetings of the head of state personify the Nation. So, in a meeting with any businessman, one would have to assume that the president meets with businessmen with a clean track record. But that has to be registered and it has to be in the Government House. Meeting secretly disguised as a racket player in a chifa seems to me to be an affront to the presidential investiture and is part of the rottenness of the politics in which he has Peru has fallen,” he said.
