Loreto: PNP seizes 160 kg of drugs and long weapons during anti-narcotics operation in the Amazon River

A joint intervention between the National Police of Peru and the Navy dealt a decisive blow to jungle drug trafficking by intercepting million-dollar shipments ready for international transfer from the Loreto region.

Police officers captured Franklin Rojas Melitón (21) guarding two boats with 160 kilos of cocaine hydrochloride, six long-range military rifles, a pistol, abundant ammunition, outboard motors, cell phones and logistical equipment. The shipment was awaiting transfer to a clandestine runway for shipments to Bolivia via river-air.

Militarized drug trafficking in the Amazon

The presence of heavy weapons confirms the violent escalation of Amazonian mafias, where young people like Rojas, who was recruited for transportation and surveillance, strengthen the firepower of transnational networks. The detainee remains under investigation in Anti-Drug Directorate (DIRANDRO) to dismantle the entire criminal structure.
