Find out how to spend less on air conditioning

Air conditioning can represent up to 40% of residential consumption in the hottest months, depending on the model, power and time of use, according to estimates from the electricity sector. But, with some simple choices, it can be the consumer’s ally on the electricity bill, not a villain.Find out how to spend less on air conditioning

The research and development (R&D) specialist at Gree, the largest air conditioning manufacturer in the world, based in Zhuhai, China, Romenig Magalhães, shared, in an interview with Brazil Agencysome tips for saving.

Choice of technology

Devices with advanced technology, such as reversewhich offer greater control over consumption, can translate into less energy waste. According to Magalhães, this technology can cause a reduction of up to 40% in residential consumption on hotter days.

Home appliances with technology reverse They operate more efficiently, as they have devices that optimize operation, avoiding energy peaks caused by the effect of turning the engine off and on from time to time, which favors energy savings and extends the useful life of the device.

In practice, the cost of keeping the equipment turned on depends on the product’s power in BTUs, which is the acronym for energy efficiency and time of use. Residential equipment with 9,000 to 12,000 BTUs can consume between 15 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and 45 kWh per month, in moderate use.

Older models, not equipped with the technology reversecan easily exceed this level, especially in red flag periods, which is directly reflected in family budgets.

Inmetro seal

Another important requirement is the energy efficiency seal from the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), which certifies that classification A, which has lower consumption and, consequently, less impact on the consumer’s pocket.

Device care

According to Magalhães, the environment where the air conditioning is installed and how it is used must also be taken into account.

For example, keeping doors and windows closed during use and protecting the place against sun and heat by using curtains and blinds are positive points.

Maintenance must also be up to date, highlighted Magalhães, considering that clean filters and periodic inspections prevent loss of efficiency.

Choice of temperature

According to Magalhães, a temperature between 23 and 25 degrees on the remote control is suitable for humans and can help with the economy.

“It provides balance so that the person feels a more comfortable environment and is also good for health. It will be a temperature of thermal comfort for the environment.”

On the other hand, the lower the temperature, the greater the energy consumption.

“The temperature in the range of 16 degrees to 20 degrees will consume a lot of energy and end up causing thermal discomfort, the air is very dry in the environment, there is low air humidity”.

Another tip given by the R&D specialist is to use the air conditioning’s “Sleep” function, which establishes a more balanced temperature at night.

“The temperature gradually increases and, when you wake up, the device’s consumption level will be much lower, with no impact on your energy bill.”
