Improvised landfills worry residents of Villa Mella

Santo Domingo.– Residents in Villa Mella, Santo Domingo Norte expressed their concern about the formation of improvised landfills on the streets and sidewalks of the sector, a situation that they attribute to the irregular collection of garbage, the high demand for the service and the lack of citizen awareness.

The community members stated that, although waste collection is carried out up to twice a week, in some places the waste lasts longer without being removed, due to high demand and the limited number of trucks available.

«They pass, but not on a regular basis. Although we must recognize that there are many sectors and we cannot put all the blame on them,” said Fernando Valerio, a resident of San Felipe.

Other residents believe that the problem lies not only in the shortage of collection trucks, but also in the lack of citizen awareness.

«The garbage problem is a question of principles. The municipalities do not collaborate enough, because we must all worry about the municipality and not leave it only to the mayor’s office,” said Jairo Paredes, motoconchista in the sector.

Some citizens pointed out that this situation is also due to the fact that the Mayor’s Office of Santo Domingo Norte carries out the collection in the morning, and they do not come again until the afternoon or evening.

«Sometimes people go out to work and don’t have time to wait for the truck; So what he does is take out the trash and leave it here in front,” said Moisés de la Cruz.

They ask for containers to reduce accumulation

Given the visible accumulations of garbage and as a partial solution to the problem, residents asked the mayor of Santo Domingo Norte to install containers in the streets, similar to those that exist in the municipality of Santo Domingo Este.

“What should be done here is to put large containers like those in Santo Domingo Este, so people don’t throw garbage on the floor,” said one of the citizens consulted.

During a tour taken by The Dayit was found that in almost every corner where there are power lines, true “mountains of garbage” form, evidencing the magnitude of the problem that affects the community.
