They denounce that political prisoners held in El Rodeo I began a hunger strike

A group of political prisoners from the Venezuelan Rodeo I prison began a hunger strike to demand their freedom and better prison conditions. This was reported this Saturday by Orlando Moreno, national coordinator of the Human Rights Committee of the Vente Venezuela party, led by the opposition and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, María Corina Machado.

In his X account, Moreno indicated that, given this situation, The group of prisoners was “subjected to prolonged isolation, in a punishment cell, forced to remain naked.”

“The inhuman conditions to which they are being subjected have them at a level of desperation and constant concern. We make an urgent call to the international community about the serious situation of political prisoners,” he said.

Political prisoners go on hunger strike in El Rodeo I

The government has not yet confirmed the hunger strike in Rodeo I, located in the state of Miranda.

This complaint occurs in the midst of a release process announced on January 8 by the president of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez. The announcement generated expectations among relatives of political prisoners, who since then spent the night outside various prisons awaiting their release.

Between 139 and 155 political prisoners have been released in Venezuela since January 8, according to a count by the NGO Foro Penal and the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD).

For its part, the PUD registered 155 releases and asked to accelerate the release processes. This so that “the suffering of political prisoners and their families, who have remained permanently vigil outside many of the penitentiary centers, finally ends.”

The Venezuelan Executive assures that the country is “free of political prisoners.” It also states that those designated as such are imprisoned for the “commission of terrible punishable acts.”
