Chihuahua, Chih., The Regional Livestock Union of Chihuahua (UGRCh) urged the federal government to strengthen sanitary measures to contain the screwworm plague and increase restrictions on the movement of cattle and cows.

In addition, the organization criticized the resolution of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) regarding the constitutional controversy 374/2024, promoted by the Legal Counsel of the Presidency, which prohibits a decree of the state government to carry out controls and inspections.

In a position addressed to the Presidency of the Republic, the producers warned that the plague increased on a national contingency scale, and livestock activity, public health, the economy of our country and the food security of Mexico are at risk.

They urged that controls and sanitary measures to contain the screwworm be carried out “with strict prevention and effective coordination, particularly given the risks represented by the movement of livestock and the introduction of meat from Central America.”

Given this scenario, the government of Chihuahua published agreement 156/2024, with the support of the livestock sector in order to impose health filters and zoosanitary inspection on livestock coming from other entities in the country.

They criticize the SCJN resolution

The livestock association criticized that these measures were objected to by the federal government and as a result of a resolution by the SCJN, the powers to carry out these inspections were withdrawn from the state.

He also recalled that Chihuahua has a recognized health status, “built over more than five decades of continuous work, particularly in the control and eradication of bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis, zoonotic diseases that represent direct risks to human health. To this effort is added today the prevention of screwworm, a third health threat with an impact also on people, already present in Mexico and Central America.”
