Although Facebook prohibited the sale of pets and livestock in its publications since 2018, a search in Marketplace leads to ads that, when clicked, direct to WhatsApp groups and internet pages where you can buy dogs, cats, birds and reptiles as pets.
The restriction is also flouted in groups on the platform such as ‘Dogs of all breeds CDMX and State of Mexico’ with 6,914 members, where posts with photographs and videos of puppies for sale are published daily.

“Shiranian: $3,500mx. They are delivered dewormed, first vaccine and card. They are delivered when they are 2 months old. Mother Shih Tzu with microchip, father Pomeranian, son of parents with pedigree. You can reserve with 1,000 and the rest a day before delivery or on the day of delivery,” answers a seller who advertises puppies for sale in this Facebook group and her contact via Whatsapp.

In Mercado Libre, at least 462 ads for the sale of dog puppies in Mexico City are shown, offering breeds such as beagle, pomeranian, golden retriever, French bulldog, English bulldog and Siberian husky; In addition to another 129 ads, they are located in the State of Mexico and at the national level there are 1,376 ads for the sale of dogs that offer shipping to the entire country, monthly payments and a 15-day “guarantee” on the animal.

The Mexico City Animal Protection and Welfare Law prohibits the sale of animals in public markets, public roads, vehicles, department stores and self-service stores, as well as any other establishment with an authorized commercial line other than the marketing of live animals.
