Venezuela condemned this Thursday that the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council does not condemn the coercive measures imposed by the United States government against the country.
The sentence was carried out before the Oral update of the High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet on the situation of human rights in Venezuela in the 49th Session of the UN Human Rights Council.
In this sense, Ambassador Héctor Constant stressed that in the report presented this Thursday “the information shared by the State was not taken into consideration.”
“We still see with concern the reminiscence of elements that exploit human rights for political purposes, which is far from the sacred objective of promoting human rights,” Constant said during his speech according to the official bulletin.
In this regard, he recalled that in recent days the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, held a videoconference with the High Commissioner, where they discussed technical assistance between both parties, as well as reiterating cooperation to strengthen all human rights mechanisms.
However, the diplomat regretted “hearing information today about alleged violations of due process of Venezuelan citizens and other lines of discourse that cast doubt on the actions of the State, despite the constant exchange of existing information with the Office officials on the ground. We take note of such allegations, but we reaffirm that they do not conform to reality.
Although the call to lift the unilateral coercive measures is appreciated, however, he pointed out that “one cannot speak of the human rights situation in Venezuela without referring to the terrible impact on the lives of our people of the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States government.
«Venezuela has been the target of at least 502 unilateral coercive measures and other criminal and illegal provisions that seek to end our inclusive social model. Today, the effect of overcompliance with such illegal measures generates terrible vices in all areas of Venezuelan social activity », he pointed out.
“We trust in the role that the High Commissioner may have to achieve the immediate cessation of these illegal actions that generate suffering and threaten the lives of my compatriots,” he stressed.
The diplomat stressed that the UN Office for Human Rights led by Bachelet has strengthened its presence in Venezuela in recent years, for which he assured that “its officials carry out their mandate with total freedom and support from the competent organs of the State.” .
