Sao Paulo dismisses its president

The president of São Paulo FC, Julio Casareswas removed from his position a few hours ago, as announced by the Brazilian club after the start of a police investigation for alleged embezzlement of funds. The police are investigating withdrawals of funds from the club’s accounts between 2021 and 2025, the Public Security Secretariat of the São Paulo State Government confirmed to AFP.

According to local media, it is a total of 11 million reais (more than 2 million euros). “The investigation continues to fully clarify the facts and identify those responsible,” the authorities informed the AFP agency.

The dismissal of Casares, 64, was approved by a large majority (188 votes in favor, 45 against and 2 abstentions) in a vote held at the Morumbi stadium by the Deliberative Council of São Paulo, the body that oversees the management of the club.

Harry Massis takes the reins until new elections

“The dismissal of the president-elect is effective immediately and will only be revoked if rejected by the General Assembly,” the club stated in its press release. For the dismissal to be definitively ratified, a simple majority of the members’ votes is required, the statement added. Harry Massis, first vice president, takes the reins until new elections are held.
