Renewables continue to gain space in the electricity generation of the DR

Renewable energy companies accuse the Government of violating laws

The advance of the renewable sources inside the park electricity generation of the Dominican Republic allowed a significant reduction in the use of fossil fuels in energy production, despite the fact that the price of some of these hydrocarbons registered a reduction.

The electricity generation coming from the two types of fuel oil (number two and six) was the one with the greatest percentage reduction between January and October of last year, falling 100% and 5.2%, respectively. These fuels were followed by natural gaswith a decrease of 3.2%.

He fuel oil number two went from contributing 10.8 gigawatts (GWh) from January to October 2024 not to contribute electricity generation in the same period of 2025, despite the fact that the price of a barrel of this fuel decreased by 10.1% in that period, falling from 96.3 dollars to 86.5 dollars.

This is reflected in the statistics of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), which indicate that the production of energy based on fuel oil number six had a reduction of 113.7 GWh, falling from the 2,194.8 Gigawatts contributed between January and October 2024 to 2,081.1 on the same date last year.

The price of a barrel of this hydrocarbon fell by 5.6 dollars, equivalent to 8.2% in the aforementioned period, falling from 68.7 dollars at 63.1 dollars.

  • Similarly, generation with natural gas registered a contraction of 254.8 GWh, going from contributing 8,012.9 in the first 10 months of 2024 to 7,758.1 in the same period last year, a drop that could be explained by being the only fuel for electricity production that suffered an increase in cost in 2025, compared to the previous year.

The price of hydrocarbon increased from 2.3 dollars, per million BTU, which it registered between January and October 2024 to 3.5 dollars in the same period of 2025, representing an increase of 54.3%.

However, despite the reduction, the natural gas I continue to be the main source of electricity generation of the country.

  • The only fossil fuel that did not register a reduction in its contribution to the country’s electricity generation was mineral coal. Production from this source increased slightly by 1.4%, going from 5,700.2 GWh between January and October 2024 to 5,779.8 in the same period last year, for an increase of 79.5 Gigawatts.

The price per ton of that fuel also fell by 8.5%, dropping the cost per ton from $82.6 in 2024 to 75.6 dollarsaccording to MEM records.

The renewables

Contrary to three of the four sources of fossil fuelsthe non-conventional renewables They experienced considerable expansion between January and October 2025, with a growth of 35.5% compared to the previous year.

The records of Ministry of Energy and Mines establish that, in the first 10 months of last year, renewables contributed 3,196.5 GWh of energy, a figure that exceeds 838.1 gigawatts the 2,358.4 GWh generated by these sources in the same period of 2024.

The number implies the greater growth recorded between January and October 2025 by the sources of electricity production in the dominican system. In addition, renewable generation exceeds the 379.3 GWh that were no longer produced with hydrocarbons during the aforementioned period last year.

In general terms, the renewable sources: hydraulic, solar, wind and biomass represented 22% of the energy production of the January-October 2025 period, an increase of 3.7 percentage points compared to 2024.

He natural gas represented 38.8% and mineral coal 28.9%. The remaining 10.3% came from fuel oil number six.
