Saab: Maduro cannot be prosecuted neither inside nor outside Venezuela

The attorney general, Tarek William Saab, assured that President Nicolás Maduro has immunity, so he cannot be tried inside or outside of Venezuela. In that sense, he described his kidnapping and the claim to be prosecuted in the United States (USA) as illegal acts.

«President Nicolás Maduro has what I call absolute personal immunity; There is no discussion there because he is a head of state. What does that imply? That he cannot be prosecuted neither inside nor outside Venezuela, much less abroad,” Saab stated during his participation in the Meeting of the Network of Jurists.

“If anyone believes that what happened on January 3 can lead to April 11, 2002, remember that there was April 13. I was a victim of fascism on April 12, having immunity just as President Nicolás Maduro has,” he said.

Likewise, he demanded the release of President Nicolás Maduro and the first Cilia Flores. “What has happened in Venezuela has surprised the world,” he stated and then asked for respect for international law. In his opinion, the armed incursion carried out by the US military forces constitutes an unprecedented violation of the fundamental treaties that govern coexistence between nations.

“In international human rights law, when some states sign the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that recognizes the sovereignty of peoples: that was pulverized on January 3,” he warned.

Likewise, he recalled that the extreme right has historically acted in violation of international law. He cited as examples the kidnapping of Commander Hugo Chávez in 2002 and his own arbitrary detention when he served as a deputy.

Call to feminism in defense of Cilia Flores

Saab took the opportunity to urge the world’s feminist movements to raise their voices in defense of Cilia Flores. He also asked to support the first president (e) of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez.

“Feminism in the world has to rise and stand up to defend Venezuelan women, to ask for the freedom of Cilia Flores,” she emphasized. He highlighted that the women of the country demand the release of Flores and unanimously support the management of the head of state in charge, Delcy Rodríguez.

In that order of ideas, the prosecutor reiterated that it is time to pay tribute to the president in charge for her “brave and heroic” work. He described her as a close companion and “soul mate” of the first lady, Cilia Flores, in the current fight.

Political maturity in the face of aggression

The highest authority of the Public Ministry denounced that, after the attack on January 3, the enemy sectors expected an outbreak of violence and a “bloodbath” in the streets. However, he highlighted that Venezuelans showed a sign of political maturity.

«What the enemy wanted was for there to be a bloodbath. “They were looking for that fratricidal fight to take place just as it happened in Iraq and Libya,” he said. Saab concluded by assuring that such scenarios will not occur in the country because “this is a town that knows where it is going.”
