The Democratic Unitary Platform confirms the release of 130 political prisoners

JEP calls for the release of all political prisoners after their releases

The Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) confirmed this Friday the release of 130 political prisoners in Venezuela, while urging the authorities to accelerate the release processes to put an end to the suffering of the detainees and their families.

“At 07:15 pm on January 16, 2026, this is the updated number” – 130 cases – “of released political prisoners that we have confirmed,” the opposition organization reported through its social network X.

The PUD stressed that there is still a significant number of people deprived of liberty for political reasons, and that the slowness in judicial processes unnecessarily prolongs the suffering of detainees and their families.

In that sense, they emphasized that: “They have to accelerate the release processes so that the suffering of political prisoners and their families who have remained permanently vigil outside many of the penitentiary centers finally ends.”

In turn, the opposition coalition reiterated its commitment to the defense of human rights and the freedom of all unjustly imprisoned citizens.

“We remain attentive, waiting for new releases, until we achieve the freedom of all political prisoners,” they stated.

For her part, the acting president Delcy Rodríguez reported last Wednesday, January 14, that the government has released a total of 406 political prisoners to date. According to their statements, these releases are part of a process aimed at “opening political spaces” and promoting understanding between diverse sectors of the country.

While the NGO Criminal Forum reported this Friday a total of 100 releases.

The difference between the figures reported by the government and those confirmed by the PUD and NGOs reflects the persistent opacity and lack of consensus on the situation of political prisoners in Venezuela. Meanwhile, family members and human rights organizations continue to demand transparency, justice and full freedom for all those detained for political reasons.
