China and Canada seal association agreement after years of tensions

Carney celebrated a “historic agreement” within the framework of a “new strategic partnership” with China, which leaves behind years of bitter diplomatic disputes, mutual detentions of citizens and tariff conflicts.

The Canadian prime minister held a press conference in Beijing after meeting with Xi.

China and Canada have reached a preliminary but historic trade agreement to eliminate trade barriers and reduce tariffs

Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada.

Under the agreement, Canada will allow the entry of 49,000 electric vehicles made in China with preferential tariffs of 6.1%.

China, for its part, must reduce tariffs on canola derivatives from 84% to around 15% starting March 1, in addition to allowing the entry of Canadian visitors without a visa.

“I am extremely happy that we are moving forward with our new strategic partnership,” said the senior Canadian official.
