The New York Times reports that ”instead of joint operations, Mexican officials this month offered some counterproposals, including greater information sharing and the United States playing a larger role in command centers.”
The media points out that in addition to Trump, in the United States Army and the CIA there is interest in carrying out “drone attacks against alleged drug laboratories, a violation of Mexican sovereignty that would significantly weaken the government.”
The US officials cited by the media also assured that fentanyl laboratories “are particularly difficult to find.”
”The laboratories emit fewer chemical traces than those of methamphetamine – which can be detected with drones – and often operate in urban areas with the rudimentary utensils found in a family kitchen, according to current and former officials,” adds the NTY.
In the recent past, US drones have entered Mexican territory to carry out surveillance and investigation work. On those occasions, the Sheinbaum administration has indicated that these are bilateral actions, permitted.
The New York Times indicates that with the Trump administration’s proposal, “US forces would participate in raids led by Mexican forces, directing the mission and making key decisions.”
The media consulted the US Department of Defense about this, which responded that “it is prepared to execute the orders of the commander in chief at any time and in any place.”
The way in which US forces entered Caracas to take away then-president Nicolás Maduro has increased alerts regarding Trump’s threats.
