Mercosur and the European Union will sign the Association Agreement tomorrow, Saturday
Uruguay welcomes the decision of the Council of the European Union to authorize the signing of the Association Agreement with Mercosur.
After more than 25 years of negotiations, this new step represents fundamental progress towards the expected entry into force of the agreement. Mercosur and the European Union (EU) thus reaffirm their willingness to move towards trade based on predictable and transparent rules.
At this moment, the States Parties of Mercosur, together with the EU, are coordinating the details of the signing ceremony of the aforementioned agreement, which will take place tomorrow, January 17, in the city of Asunción, Republic of Paraguay.
Paraguay, in its capacity as pro tempore president of the bloc, received the official communication from the European Union, the foreign minister of that country, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, reported days ago.
The strategic partnership involves the integration of a market of 800 million inhabitants, with a joint gross domestic product (GDP) equivalent to a quarter of the world’s GDP and a total trade flow that amounts to approximately 100 billion dollars, Mercosur states on its website.
“Economic and commercial ties will be strengthened with the increase in exports to the European Union, as well as the creation of an environment conducive to attracting investments, which will have a positive impact on the socioeconomic development of the member countries of both blocks,” he adds.
