Will gasoline go down in Colombia? President Petro sent a message that resonated with many

The payment of the FEPEC debt and the appreciation of the peso will allow the cost of fuel to be reduced, according to the president.

News Colombia.

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petroannounced that the price of gasoline in the country will begin to drop, after confirming that the Government has already paid off the debt of the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund (FEPEC) and that the Colombian peso has appreciated against the dollar. The announcement was made through social networks, in the midst of a direct response to former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez.

As the president explained, the full payment of the FEPEC debt eliminates one of the main factors that put upward pressure on the price of fuel. Added to this is the strengthening of the national currency against the dollar, which reduces the costs associated with the importation and stabilization of fuels in the domestic market.

Petro’s statement occurred within the framework of a discussion about the recent issuance of international bonds by Colombia, which reached 4.95 billion dollars, becoming the largest external debt operation in the country’s history. Uribe questioned this decision, pointing out that it increases debt and puts pressure on the economy.

Faced with these criticisms, the president defended the financial operation and assured that the resources were not intended to increase public spending, but rather to refinance more expensive and short-term debts inherited from previous administrations. Petro maintained that this strategy will alleviate the financial burden of the next governments.

In his message, the head of state stated that the payment of obligations such as the FEPEC makes a difference compared to the past, since, according to him, his government leaves a surplus where there was a deficit before. “Because we already paid the FEPEC debt and because the Colombian peso appreciated against the dollar, then I am warning you and the country that we will begin to lower the price of gasoline,” he said.

Currently, the price of a gallon of gasoline in Colombia is between 16,000 and 16,500 pesos, figures that were recorded at the beginning of January 2026. Although the Government did not specify when or to what magnitude the reduction will be reflected, the announcement generates expectations among citizens, in the midst of the debate over the cost of living and the impact of fuel on the daily economy.
