A space to remember Oribe will be in front of the Municipal Stadium

In Cerro Largo, and more particularly in the city of Melo, the National Party has several places that remember the main figures who, throughout almost 200 years of history, forged one of the oldest political groups in the world.

Thus, Wilson Ferreira, Herrera, Saravia and Leandro Gómez already have busts or monoliths where on important dates the Nationalist Department promotes and carries out memorial events.

A few days ago, on Friday, January 2, a wreath was placed in the Leandro Gómez square, which is located on José Pedro Varela Street and José Cúneo Avenue.

In the last Ordinary Session of the Departmental Board in 2025, it was unanimously approved by 28 Councilors present in the Chamber to allocate a physical space to remember Brigadier General Manuel Oribe, founder of the National Party and a fundamental figure in the independence process of Uruguay, even being the 2nd Constitutional President of the Republic.

The Report of the Legislation Commission states that “considering Official Letter No. 457/2025 dated November 6, 2025, sent by the Departmental Administration of Cerro Largo, exercising legislative initiative, in order to request the necessary authorization for the placement of a bust in tribute to General Manuel Ceferino Oribe.”

In Result I establishes that “From Executive Administrative File No. 5173/2025, arises the request made by the Nationalist Department of Cerro Largo, with the intention of honoring General Manuel Ceferino Oribe, by placing a bust in the public space, Padrón 11,015 of the Cadastral Melo locality, located at the intersection of Avenida Tabaré Etcheverry and Ruta 8 Brigadier General Manuel streets. “Oribe.”

Later, the Report of the Legislation Commission of the Departmental Board of Cerro Largo states, in Result II “that the aforementioned petition is motivated by the relevance of honoring a national hero, an active participant in the independence revolution along with General José Gervasio Artigas, member of the Liberation Crusade of 1825, President of our country, founder of the National Party, with the aim that this space serves as a meeting and reflection place for present and future generations.”

Considering “that it is of departmental interest to carry out a tribute to General Manuel Ceferino Oribe, an eminent figure in our national history, the Departmental Board of Cerro Largo Resolves: Authorizes the placement of a bust in tribute to General Manuel Ceferino Oribe in the public space located in Padrón 11,015 of the Cadastral Melo locality (photo), at the intersection of Avenida Tabaré Etcheverry and Ruta N° streets 8 Brigadier General Manuel Oribe”.
