SANTO DOMINGO.- President Luis Abinader will lead this Wednesday the official test ceremony for the issuance of the new electronic passportwhose first issue will be delivered to the President.
The activity will be carried out in the new offices of the General Directorate of Passports located on Dr. Defilló Avenue, corner of John F. Kennedy.
The biometric passport incorporates a electronic chip which stores the holder’s biometric data, such as face, fingerprints and digital signature, in addition to more than 70 security measures, facilitating international travel and complying with international standards.
The general availability of the new document will be made progressively in the country’s offices starting in February, and in the Dominican consulates abroad from June 2026.
The first copies of the electronic passport arrived in the country last September to undergo security and functionality tests.
The new document will have a data sheet in polycarbonate and high quality materials. It will be valid for between five and ten years, and will allow more agile, secure and efficient identity authentication for Dominican citizens.
When will appointments open for users?
for the day On January 15, appointments will open so that users with expired passports or that have a validity of less than six months left, they can renew them with the new format, in the new installation physics of the entity.
