Secretary General of the OAS arrives in Peru to address democratic governance and regional security

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, will begin an official visit to Peru this Wednesday, January 14, as part of the organization’s permanent commitment to its Member States. The arrival of the senior official in Lima occurs in a regional context marked by political tensions and challenges in terms of democratic governance and security.

The cultural conflict around Candelaria 2026 stands out for its diplomatic and social impact, as it involves not only artists and regional authorities from both sides of the border, but also a wide range of groups seeking to claim the authenticity of their expressions.

According to the OAS, the central objective of the visit is to promote dialogue and exchange of positions on the main institutional challenges facing the countries of the continent. The organization highlighted that this agenda is part of its role of accompaniment, observation and monitoring of political and social processes in the Americas.

During his stay in the Peruvian capital, Ramdin will hold meetings with “highest level” government authorities, as well as with other key actors in the political and social sphere. These meetings will seek to generate spaces for conversation about the local and regional situation, with emphasis on strengthening democratic institutions and political stability.

The OAS also specified that the agenda will include the analysis of recent events that are taking place in different countries in the region. In this sense, the organization stressed that it maintains constant monitoring of the hemispheric scenario and that its leadership is prepared to act promptly when circumstances require it, within the framework of its powers.

Who is Albert R. Ramdin?

Albert R. Ramdin is a Surinamese diplomat who assumed the position of Secretary General of the OAS after being elected on March 10, 2025, during an extraordinary session of the General Assembly. His appointment marked a historic milestone as he became the first representative of a country from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to lead the hemispheric organization.

His mandate, which extends from 2025 to 2030, officially began on May 26, 2025 and has as its priority axes regional cooperation, sustainable development and the strengthening of democracy in the Americas. Before assuming the general secretaryship, Ramdin served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and International Cooperation of Suriname between 2020 and 2025.
