The accident occurred when a truck collided with a tricycle.
MIAMI, United States. – A traffic accident occurred this Monday afternoon on the Moa-Baracoa highway, in the municipality of Moa (Holguin), left a balance of six dead and five injured, according to published information by the Cuban News Agency (ACN).
According to statements by Camilo Velazco Petittón, director of the local radio station La Voz del Níquel, to ACN, the incident took place “in the vicinity of the Ernesto factory. Che Guevara” when “a truck” hit “a tricycle.”
Official media identified the six deceased people as Andys William Mendoza Ferrer (41 years old), María Carla Noguera Despaine (19), Enoelio Borges Reyes (50), Emmanuel Rodríguez Igarza (23), Eloina Reyes González (69) and Liolbis Loforte Alpajón (33).
The injured, the ACN stated, are Sandro Medina Oliveros (52 years old), Yanet Rodríguez Reyes (49, resident of Punta Gorda Arriba), Omar Breffe Blanco (58), Lissette Suárez Lobaina (29, resident of Quemado del Negro) and Eroeldis Borges Alpajón (23, resident of Cayo Grande de Yamanigüey).
The ACN noted that “political and government authorities” attended the scene along with “rescue technicians from the nickel industries” and that “emergency protocols were activated at the Guillermo Luis hospital.” Regarding the origin of the incident, he added that the causes were being investigated.
Between January and August 2025, 5,025 accidents were reported in Cuba—41 more than in the same period in 2024—with 4,516 injuries and 502 deaths. according to Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the National Transit Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT).
Among the main causes of accidents are “not paying due attention to controlling the vehicle” and “disrespect for the right of way”, which – according to the same official source – account for 63% of the incidents. Likewise, in that report it emerged that “seven out of 10 events generate victims” and that vehicle collisions “continue to be the most dangerous accident with 36% of the total number of deaths.”
