The two sons of journalist Vladimir Herzog, murdered by the military dictatorship in 1975, were recognized as political amnesties by the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship.
In addition to receiving an official apology from the Brazilian State, Ivo and André Herzog will be compensated R$100,000 each.
THE ordinance that recognizes the two brothers as amnestied was published in the Monday (12) edition of Official Gazette of the Unionby the Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Macaé Evaristo.
“In 2024, Clarice Herzog was granted political amnesty status. The decision expands the reparation process already recognized by the State in relation to the Herzog family”, the ministry explained in a note.
Advisor to the Amnesty Commission and rapporteur for Ivo and André Herzog, Gabriela de Sá explains that the recognition of political amnesty for Vladimir’s children represents a historical reparation for a period that caused intergenerational trauma.
“It is important to highlight that all people who have suffered institutional, complementary or exceptional acts in their entirety are considered political amnesties. This means that, when restrictions are imposed on family coexistence, we are dealing with an exceptional measure that directly violates the rights of the sons and daughters of those who have been politically persecuted”, he explained.
According to her, the analysis of the documentation included in the political amnesty applications shows how much the brothers “were affected since childhood by disputes surrounding the different versions about the circumstances of their father’s murder”.
“Above all, the ostentatious exposure of the record of Vladimir Herzog lifeless in the DOI-CODI cell, in São Paulo, highlighting the need to recognize the human rights violations that directly affected the brothers, during the period of the dictatorship”, added the counselor.
