Sheinbaum meets with Ricardo Monreal and Adán Augusto to check the legislative agenda

By 2026, Mexican legislators have a long agenda of pending reforms to approve. Most of them are initiatives sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum and that have not been analyzed or were only approved in part.

Among these proposals are modifications to create the figure of faceless judges, reduce workers’ working hours and even create new rules for the 2027 elections.

The agenda will be discussed by senators and deputies starting February 1, when the next regular period of sessions in the chambers begins.

In the Senate, one of the main topics to be discussed in 2026 are reforms to the National Code of Criminal Procedures and the Federal Law Against Organized Crime, which create the figure of faceless judges; That is, the identity of judges will be reserved when they are in charge of cases of human trafficking, crimes against health, arms trafficking, financing of terrorism or organ trafficking.

In the Senate, the discussion of the initiative that the federal president sent to reduce the working day to 40 hours a week last December is also pending for this year.

There are also pending issues in the Lower House and one is the Electoral Reform initiative sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum, which is expected to establish the disappearance of the Public Local Electoral Bodies (Oples), the reduction of legislators by proportional representation or “pluris” and the reduction of the budget of political parties.

The president has said that the proposal – prepared by the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform, headed by Pablo Gómez Álvarez – will be delivered in “mid-January” in order to be analyzed during this regular period of sessions.
