Sheinbaum rules out intervention

This Monday morning, President Claudia Sheinbaum held a call with her counterpart Donald Trump, to whom she expressed her willingness to collaborate, but with respect for the sovereignty of both nations.

When referring to the details of the conversation, the federal president explained that she discussed with Trump Mexico’s results in the fight against drugs such as fentanyl and the destruction of laboratories and ruled out a possible intervention.

“Let’s say that it was clear in the conversation that there is collaboration, coordination and that we continue to work together within that framework, they can always declare something else, at some point and we will look for a new call, if so,” he said.

‘A soldier in every son he gave you’

President Sheinbaum assures that she is not concerned about the statements from the United States that suggest the idea of carrying out an intervention in Mexico, since, she maintains with the Trump government there is not only collaboration, but also results.

“If there was no communication of any kind, if we did not have collaboration, if Secretary Rubio himself, the spokesperson for the United States government himself, President Trump himself had not referred to the good relationship we have and the coordination that exists, well perhaps if there were no communication, we would be worried, right?” said the president in her conference last Monday.

However, weeks ago he assured that if there were any attempt to violate the sovereignty of Mexico, a part of the national anthem that reads “A soldier gave you every son” could be made effective.

“Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country, and no foreign government would dare to violate our sovereignty. It is not like before. Mexico has a lot of strength: national for our people, for what we represent, as a government of the people, and international. So, no, that is not going to happen. And as I said: any attempt, we have the National Anthem: ‘…a soldier in every son he gave you,'” he said on August 22.

Almost two centuries have passed since Mexico and the United States had their last war, which took place between 1846-1848. In that episode, Mexico ceded more than half of its territory to the United States.

However, the relationship between the US government and Mexico has been tense this year. Before Trump arrived at the White House for the second time, he threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico if it did not do more to contain migration and fentanyl trafficking.

Through dialogue and deploying 10,000 members of the Armed Forces to the border with the United States, the Trump administration agreed to pause the new taxes.

During this first year, Trump has taken more measures against drug trafficking and this Thursday he stated that he would begin to attack the cartels on the ground, which has raised alarm in Mexico.
