The organization described these deaths as “state murders” and attributed the causes to prison conditions, lack of health care or torture.
The Committee for the Freedom of Social Fighters and Political Prisoners reported this Sunday, January 11, that 26 people have died in State custody during the last decade.
After the death -on January 10- of the official Edison Torres, who was imprisoned in Zone 7 of the Bolivarian National Police in Boleita, Miranda state, the organization released the list.
«We have described the deaths of #PoliticalPrisoners in Venezuela as state murders. The vast majority have died as a result of prison conditions, lack of attention to their health or torture. As of today #11Jan there are 26 of these State Crimes,” pointed out in the publication.
The deaths occurred in various detention centers, including El Helicoide, El Rodeo, Tocuyito, La Pica, Ramo Verde and Zona 7.
Eight dead after post-election protests
For its part, the Human Rights Committee of Vente Venezuela pointed out that with the death of Torres, there are eight political prisoners who have died in the custody of the Maduro administration since the beginning of the repression following the electoral process of July 28, 2024.
«This death is not fortuitous nor accidental. “It is a crime committed directly by the Venezuelan regime, absolutely responsible for guaranteeing the physical integrity and life of every person deprived of liberty,” noted the Vente Venezuela team.
The Human Rights Committee highlighted that Torres’ case represents a warning about the risk in which political prisoners find themselves, who suffer from chronic diseases or complex health conditions without receiving adequate medical care, in addition to the “inhuman conditions of confinement, prolonged isolation, torture and cruel treatment” to which they are subjected.
