Aircraft flights over Mexican soil remain under surveillance, said the Secretary of National Defense, Ricardo Trevilla.
“An overflight program is carried out, there is very strict control and all these overflights that have been carried out this month are from the agencies that make up the security cabinet, everything is controlled by the National Surveillance Center (…) There have been no overflights of foreign aircraft in national territory,” he commented, within the framework of a press conference to announce the progress of the investigation into the murder of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán.
For his part, Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Federal Security, assured that permanent communication is maintained with the US security institutions, with which there are constantly extraditions, operations and arrests, coupled with the exchange of information.
In turn, Harfuch indicated that work is being done to arrange an upcoming security meeting with US authorities.
“The chancellor, Dr. De la Fuente, is working to define the date of the meeting. However, there are permanent, constant meetings of all the institutions of the security cabinet with the security institutions of the United States,” he commented.
Disagreements
Within the security cabinet in Mexico, important differences have emerged about what the official reaction to the US attacks on Venezuela should be, coupled with the fact that there is a significant fear of being the next country in the crosshairs of the government headed by Donald Trump, revealed a report by The New York Times.
“Some cabinet members are concerned that (President Claudia) Sheinbaum’s repeated public condemnations of the attacks in Venezuela could backfire, according to a Mexican official and a person close to the government with direct knowledge of the disagreements. Senior officials are especially concerned about their effect on ongoing tariff negotiations, as well as the planned review of the free trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada this summer, the officials said,” the US newspaper said.
In the journalistic piece signed by Paulina Villegas and James Wagner, it was also indicated that after the US attacks and the capture and extraction of President Nicolás Maduro, the Mexican government monitored Trump’s mentions of Mexico, according to a federal official who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak.
This monitoring, it was specified, showed that after the attack on Venezuela, references to Mexico by Trump increased, although they decreased since Monday, January 5, when the president began talking about Greenland.
Last Thursday, Trump’s interview with the Fox News network was released, in which he indicated that a direct attack in the territory against the Mexican cartels is still on the table.
This caused President Sheinbaum to insist, during last Friday, Saturday and Sunday, on the inviolability of Mexican sovereignty and the close collaboration that is maintained with the US government.
