Pope Leo XIV demands respect for sovereignty

From the Apostolic Palace, Pope Leo XIV renewed this Sunday his urgent call to cultivate peace. After praying the Angelus, the Pontiff regretted that the diplomacy of consensus is being displaced by a “diplomacy of force.” For the bishop of Rome, the world is witnessing a regression where war seems to be “in fashion.”

The Holy Father dedicated special attention to the situation that Venezuela is going through after the United States military incursion. Leo XIV emphasized the imperative need to respect the will of the Venezuelan people. According to the Supreme Pontiff, stability in Venezuela is only possible if external aggressions are stopped and the common good is prioritized.

The presence of North American military fleets in Caribbean waters was indicated by the Pope as a cause of deep concern. He warned that the increase in tensions in these strategic areas puts the peace of the continent at risk. He urged powers to seek peaceful political solutions and abandon armed intimidation under security pretexts.

During his speech, he analyzed the worrying weakening of multilateralism at the international level. He denounced that the order established after the Second World War was broken. For the Vatican, replacing dialogue with brute force represents a direct attack on human rights that also affects Iran and Syria.

The Pope recalled that peace requires the “humility of truth and the courage of forgiveness.” He harshly criticized those who use weapons to assert their own dominance and undermine the global rule of law. His message was an invitation to recover constructive diplomacy to prevent war ambitions from continuing to take innocent lives.

The bishop of Rome asked for prayers for the victims of recent attacks in Venezuela and the Middle East. The Holy See reaffirmed that human dignity must be above any national interest. With this call, Leo XIV positions himself again against interventionism and in defense of the sovereignty of the States.
