The residents of Isla Mocha, in the Biobío region, have been without electricity for more than 48 hours and have been rationing energy for weeks.
As stated Radio Bio-Bio, the cooperative in charge of the service maintains a million-dollar debt with the oil supplier in the area. The fact has meant that for days the inhabitants of the Island have had to ration energy.
The mayor of Lebu, Cristián Peña, indicated that the reason for this problem is related to a financial problem of the cooperative that manages the service in Isla Mocha, a debt that would be close to one billion pesos.
“They have been without electricity for two days and for several weeks with rationing, that is, they had electricity at a certain time of day. Most of the day without electricity and this is mainly due to a financial problem on the part of the electric cooperative that manages the service on Isla Mocha,” he said.
“There is a lawsuit filed by one of the cooperative’s suppliers, to whom a huge amount of resources is owed, who supplies oil to the electrical system,” he added.
In an audiovisual record shared by an inhabitant of the Island, the consequences of the event can be seen, where they had to throw away the food due to the non-functioning of the refrigerator as a result of the situation.
“Total loss on Isla Mocha due to lack of light and here we are throwing away more things. Some have motors, but it is not enough for a freezer. This is a total loss for us and it is also a sacrifice. Here we are throwing away our products due to lack of oil on Isla Mocha,” the woman denounced.
Looking for a possible solution to the problem, the mayor of Lebu commented that “the Regional Government is prevented from delivering the resources until that problem is solved, which has unfortunately led the residents of Isla Mocha to be without electricity, due to a bad administration and lack of financial experience on the part of the cooperative.” “We hope that this will be resolved as soon as possible. The Regional Government is negotiating with the supplier to be able to pay him a certain amount of resources,” he added.
“As a municipality we are going to deliver a solution to the cooperative in an extraordinary way so that it can make the system work,” he concluded.
