Constitutional Block demands full and unconditional freedom for all political prisoners

He Constitutional Block of Venezuela issued an agreement this Saturday, January 10, in which it demands the immediate, full and unrestricted freedom of all people imprisoned for political reasons in the countryin the context of the recent releases announced by the government and the observations of human rights organizations, according to a statement released by the organization.

The Block recalls that on January 8, 2026, the National Assembly (AN) announced the release of a “significant number” of political prisoners, describing the measure as a “gesture of broad intention to search for peace” and a contribution so that the republic continues “its peaceful life and in search of prosperity.”

The announcement was made by the president of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, as part of a release process initiated under the interim government after the capture of former president Nicolás Maduro.

The organization emphasizes that Political prisoners are citizens arbitrarily imprisoned for their political ideas and convictions.a practice that contravenes both the Venezuelan Constitution and multiple international pacts, treaties and conventions on human rights.

Full, unconditional and unrestricted release

Human rights groups have documented that, despite some releases, Hundreds of prisoners are still detained for political reasonsmany of them in centers such as El Helicoide or El Rodeo, and their families wait without clarity about the real scope of the releases.

In this sense, the Constitutional Block demands the immediate release of all people imprisoned for political reasons, whether Venezuelan or foreign, in the context of the political process that is intended to be overcome. The text maintains that only the full, unconditional and unrestricted release will allow the effective restitution of the right to personal freedom enshrined in the Magna Carta and international instruments.

The second point of the agreement emphasizes that the partial release, although well-intentioned, not enough to restore the rule of lawand that no step towards peace and peaceful coexistence can be considered complete without the total release of all those imprisoned for their political ideas.

Finally, the Constitutional Block points out that the commitment of the Venezuelan authorities, made official in the voice of various State institutions, imposes the absolute cessation of the illegitimate practice of imprisoning and prosecuting citizens for their political beliefsa demand that will allow progress towards the restoration of fundamental freedoms and lasting democratic coexistence.

This statement occurs in the midst of national and international expectations about the continuity and transparency of the release process, in the face of complaints of opacity in some releases and the persistence of a considerable number of political prisoners in legal uncertainty and effective compliance with rights.
