Distribution of liquefied gas in eastern provinces suspended until further notice

Gas licuado, Cuba

Limited access to gas increases its price in the informal market, where it is already quoted at prices ranging from 10,000 to 50,000 pesos.

LIMA, Peru – The state-owned Cubapetróleo (CUPET) has suspended the sale and distribution of liquefied gas within Santiago de Cuba and the eastern provinces due to a shortage of the product.

The middle Martí News consulted official sources within the Island to investigate the causes, knowing that the authorities do not know an exact date when the service can resume.

According to the report, the gas is currently on a ship from Russia. “I think it has already arrived, but now the clearing is coming, you know that there is a process,” says an official of the Provincial Government.

Limited access to the product raises its price in the informal market, where it is already quoted at prices ranging from 10,000 to 50,000 pesos for a complete cylinder, depending on the territory.

The problems with liquefied gas in Eastern Cuba are part of the acute energy crisis that crosses Cuba. In the absence of this resource, many homes depend on electricity for cooking, a service that also suffers from prolonged daily blackouts.

Added to the energy instability is the general economic deterioration, the lack of food, medicine and fuel, and sustained inflation that continues to deteriorate the living conditions of the Cuban population.

At the end of last November, maintenance at the ENERGAS plant in Puerto Escondido also left the inhabitants of seven Havana municipalities without service for a few days.

According to the Manufactured Gas Company and the state press In Cuba, a total shutdown was carried out at the plant with the objective of “guaranteeing operational safety.”

For its part, last August, the same state company had reported a total cut of the gas service in Playa and Marianao due to replacement work on a section of transmission pipeline.

Likewise, during the eighth month of 2025, several neighborhoods in the Cuban capital they woke up without service street gas. Complaints from users on social networks highlighted the lack of notice about the cut and reported damages in the municipalities of 10 de Octubre, Plaza de la Revolución and Old Havana.
