The pending regulation amid protests

Less than five months before the opening match of the Soccer World Cup – which will begin with the first kick on June 11 at the CDMX Stadium, formerly the Azteca Stadium – concern about rising housing prices, gentrification and even irregular evictions has been felt in the capital.

Families evicted from the building of República de Cuba 11 demonstrated in front of the capital’s Congress for the irregularities in the trial that led them to be forcibly expelled from the apartments where they lived; Marches against gentrification had already been held in the city before, one on July 4 in the Roma-Condesa corridor, one of the most popular among digital nomads, and the second from Fuentes Brotantes to Ciudad Universitaria on July 20.

The Head of Government, Clara Brugada, announced in July a total of 14 points to combat the displacement of the original inhabitants of Mexico City due to rising rents, among which the presentation of a Fair Rents initiative stands out as well as strengthening the regulation on tourist housing platforms such as Airbnb.

Although these initiatives were indicated to be presented to the local Congress in October, they have not yet been sent and Brugada assured that it will be this January when his reform proposals arrive.

At the beginning of the year we are going to figure out how we are going to regulate this, especially registration (for tourist homes on platforms).

Clara Brugada, head of Government of CDMX.

Currently we have certain regulations on these platforms and what we are going to do is open the registry, which is already regulated. The rest will come according to the law, but we are prepared for the World Cup,” said Brugada on December 30 during a press conference.

Inti Muñoz, Secretary of Housing, justified that the initiatives have not been presented because they are expected at the beginning of the regular period of the city Congress that starts on February 1, in addition to including the various opinions.

“One of the reasons is that we have taken all the necessary care to include different opinions that were expressed during the forums that were held, around Side One. Special emphasis has also been placed on taking care of how the so-called reasonable rental price index should be applied,” said the official at said conference.
