Cubans in MLB: Andy Ibáñez goes to the Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers They agreed this Friday with the Cuban Andy Ibáñez on a contract for next season, and thus took another step to reinforce the squad in order to defend their crown in the Major Leagues (MLB, for its acronym in English).

The Californian franchise, which has not yet revealed the details of the operation, seeks to consolidate its chances of fighting for the title again by acquiring a player with the ability to efficiently defend several positions in the infield.

Ibáñez arrives at the Dodgers after a more or less discreet season with the Detroit Tigers, whose management declined the possibility of extending the relationship with the 32-year-old player.

According to the official statisticsLast year, the Cuban posted an offensive average of .239 in 91 games, in addition to four home runs, 25 RBIs and an OPS of .653.

The Dodgers will have to make several moves to make room for Ibáñez on the 40-man roster, and thus provide the manager with greater flexibility with a utilities who, in addition to his defensive performances, has stood out for his timely hitting in moments of high pressure.

Ibáñez stood out at a very young age in the National Baseball Series (SNB), and debuted in the MLB during the 2021 season with the Texas Rangers. He remained on that team for two seasons, before moving to Detroit.

Awaiting him on the champion team of the last two seasons is his compatriot Andy Pagés, who has established himself as one of the pillars on which many see the possible construction of another dynasty in the MLB.

World Series: a Cuban hero on the Dodgers’ throne

Both players also appear as key figures in the plan of the Cuban Baseball and Softball Federation (FCBS) for the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC)although the entity has not officially announced the list of 35 players sent to the tournament organizers.

Both Ibáñez and Pagés have publicly expressed their desire to represent the island in the most important baseball tournament for national teams on the planet, but their participation will depend on the authorization of the club.

Ibáñez enjoyed that experience in the last edition of the competition, in which Cuba managed to advance to the semifinal round, in which it was eliminated after the defeat against the United States.
