Inpe confirms reduction in deforestation in most biomes in 2024

The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) consolidated data from the Annual Monitoring of Native Vegetation Suppression (Prodes) system for the year 2024 for all Brazilian biomes. The analysis of images from previously released alerts confirmed the reduction in the suppression of natural vegetation in most of the monitored biomes, in relation to 2023. Inpe confirms reduction in deforestation in most biomes in 2024

Consolidated data shows that between 2023 and 2024 there was a reduction in deforestation in the following biomes:

Amazon: 28.09%

Non-forest area in the Amazon: 5.27%

Cerrado: 25.76%

Atlantic Forest: 37.89%

Pampa: 20.08%

The Caatinga and Pantanal biomes were the only ones that showed growth in relation to the areas that suffered suppression of native vegetation. The increases were:

Caatinga: 9.93%

Pantanal: 16.5%

According to a technical note released by Inpe, only the removal of native vegetation cover is considered suppression, regardless of the characteristics of the vegetation and the future use of the area.. The analyzes are carried out using satellite images of suppressed areas, automatically identified and classified based on vegetation indices. Then they undergo visual interpretation.

In the assessment of the deputy coordinator of the Inpe BiomasBR Program, Silvana Amaral, the drop in deforestation in most Brazilian biomes between 2023 and 2024 corroborates the effectiveness and importance of public command and control policies, as well as regulatory mechanisms such as agreements and terms of conduct signed between civil society and sectors of trade and export of agricultural products.

The consolidation of Prodes data serves to analyze medium and long-term trends in deforestation in Brazil, in a complementary way to the anticipated results. This is information that supports the construction and implementation of public environmental policies.
