Uruguayan government follows the events in Venezuela with “attention and serious concern”

The statement issued this Saturday the 3rd by the Foreign Ministry indicates that “the Government of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay is following with attention and serious concern the events that have been reported from Venezuela since the last few hours”, which include “air attacks by the United States against Venezuelan military installations and civil infrastructure.”

“Uruguay rejects, as it has always done, the military intervention of one country in the territory of another and reaffirms the importance of respecting International Law and the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the basic principle that States must refrain from resorting to the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State, or in any other manner incompatible with the Purposes of the United Nations,” the document reaffirms.

Furthermore, it reaffirms “the character of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace and free of nuclear weapons, as has been the consensus position” in the region.

The Foreign Ministry assured that it maintains “permanent contact” with the Consulate in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, to monitor the situation of both the community of compatriots in that country, as well as the diplomatic and administrative corps in office.

“We call on the authorities of the United Nations and the Organization of American States to use their good offices in order to seek a positive solution to this difficult situation,” the statement concludes.
